The Astronomical Cost of Afro-Hair Care

Recent statistics show that black women spend more than £160m on hair care, making up 10% of the UK market despite being only 2% of the population. For a students like me, after paying for rent and food for the month, the question becomes: how am I going to afford to pay for these necessary protective styles.

Redefining Beauty: A Film by Ruthea Robinson

‘Redefining Beauty’ has become a passion project of sorts and serves as a platform that represents women like Zoey and me who have had to endure the never-ending list of requirements to be considered beautiful. I wanted black women to be the focus and this intention remained throughout the pre-and-post-production process, explaining why the film begins with one of my favourite shots. As Zoey expresses her frustration towards the negative statements made by peers about her skin colour, in the background just slightly out of focus, is a picture of Audrey Hepburn, a notable British actress who embodied the European beauty standard . Not so subtly hinting at my documentary’s purpose: to spotlight the voices and experiences of black women without centring the white gaze.
